🚨 Walmart dumps OpenAI’s Instant Checkout due to accuracy, integration issues, and weak conversions.

This highlights the “missing semantic layer” in early agentic commerce: scraping fails when real-time inventory, loyalty, pricing, and trustworthy checkout matter.

Google’s Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) nailed this. An open “common language” that gives AI agents native understanding of products/offers without brittle hacks.

And this concept translates powerfully to telecom too.

Imagine asking Gemini: “Upgrade my Verizon plan to unlimited 5G, add a line for my teen, check coverage at my new address, and activate eSIM. Also, apply any family discounts.” Without a strong semantic layer/protocol, agents scrape carrier sites → errors on eligibility, promos, billing, or activation. Carriers lose control over CX and compliance.

UCP-style standardization could let telcos expose real-time plans, devices, coverage, loyalty perks, and secure activation, enabling agentic upgrades/add-ons while owning the relationship. (Similar to how Walmart pairs its data with Gemini via UCP.)
