CDP: A 5-Year Retrospective & Strategic Guidance for 2024
Data-driven revolution is the currency that fuels growth, innovation, and customer centricity. The foundation for this revolution is Customer Data Platforms (CDPs). Through a five-year retrospective (based on facts and actual events), it is abundantly clear that CDPs have transcended mere buzzwords—they are the linchpin of success for organizations across industries.
CDP Evolution: A Year-by-Year Snapshot
2016–2018: The Toddler years
According to the CDP Institute, Customer Data Platforms (CDPs) emerged as a category in 2016. This is when CDPs first appeared on the Gartner Hype Cycle, and the Customer Data Platform Institute was founded. In the following two years, 2017 and 2018 saw a stream of independent vendors with niche offerings under the CDP umbrella. In 2018, they started getting acquired by large organizations (e.g., Salesforce acquiring Datorama, Arm Holdings acquisition of Treasure Data) into their broader marketing suites.
2019: More acquisitions & the move from Suite to Platform
The CDP industry experienced remarkable growth and gained considerable attention because of the increasing demand from marketers for a unified customer view, rising customer privacy concerns, and the introduction of stricter data privacy laws such as GDPR and CCPA. These factors drove the widespread adoption of CDPs. The CDP market remains segmented (i.e., data, analytics, and engagement/campaign/personalization CDP), focused on centralizing and activating customer data. Major players like Salesforce and Adobe entered the field, and several M&As progressed. For example, Amperity’s acquisition of Custora and Acquia’s acquisition of AgilOne.
Organizations started adopting CDPs to not just centralize and activate customer data but also to focus on customer journey mapping and integration of AI and machine learning (ML) capabilities to enhance customer insights and enable basic personalization.
2020: Digital technology acceleration & Personalized customer experiences
The CDP market remains resilient amidst the pandemic as brands pivot to online engagement and enable personalized customer experiences. In fact, the pandemic accelerated the adoption of digital technologies, leading to a greater demand for CDPs to support online customer engagement and marketing efforts. The expectation is that the market size will reach $20.5 billion by 2027, with a 34% CAGR growth rate as per the Research and Markets report. Several notable mergers and acquisitions took place, e.g., the acquisition of Segment by Twilio.
Integration with marketing automation platforms and cross-channel campaigns grew. Use cases around retail and e-commerce spiked. The overall volume of events tracked through CDPs increased by 60% in 2020, as per Segment’s CDP 2020 report. Enterprises sent data to multiple destinations, emphasizing the importance of data connectivity. Behavioral data points like product additions, checkouts, and order completions gained focus.
2021: Advanced analytics, Consent management & Healthcare
The healthcare sector showed significant interest in CDP, with the global healthcare customer data platform market expected to reach $1.6 billion by 2028, as per Grand View Research. The financial sector also showed an equal interest in CDPs. With this, the CDP industry witnessed a surge in investment and innovation. Greater focus on enhancing customer data management and activation capabilities.
Major CDP providers introduced new features backed by AI/ML for real-time customer insights and predictive analytics. In addition, they focused on consent management and governance to address the evolving privacy regulations. The number of use cases spiked across industries such as retail, e-commerce, healthcare, and financial services.
2022: Consolidation, Convergence & Conferences
The CDP landscape continues to evolve, with a growing emphasis on the convergence of CDPs with other marketing technologies, such as customer relationship management (CRM) and digital asset management (DAM). Several case studies and use cases highlight the impact of CDPs in driving personalized marketing campaigns and improving customer engagement. The number of conferences and summits dedicated to CDPs, providing a platform for industry leaders to share best practices and insights, witnessed a surge.
The focus turned towards omnichannel experience platforms, orchestrating personalized journeys across touchpoints, customer loyalty, and emotional connections. The exponential increase in data volume and the need to maintain privacy while delivering personalized customer engagement resulted in organizations becoming more cautious and efficient in what data points they collect.
2023: Data-driven strategies, Measurable ROI & Delivering experiences
Packaged or composable, CDP is an integral part of the modern tech stack, partly due to the increasing need for omnichannel experiences. Infusion of AI in CDPs raises the bar by delivering hyper-personalization, predictive campaign optimization, and building trust through responsible AI out of the box. The roll-out of a real-time CDP (not near real-time). CDP World hosted by Treasure Data brought together over 400 enthusiasts to discuss the latest trends and best practices in customer data management and activation. CDP vendors are partnering with various vendors for joint GTM using their individual strengths—for example, Amperity with Databricks, ActionIQ with Snowplow.
Organizations are focusing on business value and core metrics (e.g., CAC — Customer Acquisition Cost, LTV — Lifetime Value, and ROAS — Return on Ad Spend) to navigate the macro-economic turbulence while delivering (personalized) experiences to their customers.
Industry Impact — Highlights:
Retail: CDPs helped retailers personalize product recommendations and promotions, leading to a 15% increase in average order value (Everest Group).
Financial Services: CDPs enabled banks to segment customers based on financial behavior, resulting in a 20% rise in targeted marketing campaign ROI (Forrester).
Healthcare: CDPs facilitated improved patient communication and engagement, leading to a 10% reduction in readmission rates (Accenture).
Travel & Hospitality: CDPs personalized travel offers and loyalty programs, resulting in a 12% increase in customer retention (McKinsey & Company).
2024: What lies ahead: The birth of General-Purpose Data Platforms
Partnerships & Integrations:
We can expect some acquisitions and more partnerships to provide a comprehensive and integrated package. In particular, a tight coupling with the MadTech stack will be predominant. For instance, the integration of CRM systems, marketing automation platforms, AI/GenAI, and analytical tools enables the establishment of a cohesive ecosystem that allows data to be effortlessly shared across various touchpoints. Inclusion of a dedicated graph management system within the CDP to enable visualization and also address specific use cases.
Industry-Focused Offerings:
More industry-specific CDPs will emerge, catering to the unique needs of sectors like retail, healthcare, finance, consumer goods, manufacturing (auto), etc. In short, they will come with pre-configured (but customizable) models and functionalities specific to the industry, making implementation and adoption faster. In addition, these specialized CDPs will offer tailored features and compliance frameworks to address the unique (business & regulatory) needs and data challenges each of these diverse industries face.
Composable CDPs:
While the debate between composable and packaged CDPs will intensify, composable CDPs will gain traction. Organizations will pick flexibility and best-of-breed components over monolithic solutions to adapt swiftly to changing macroeconomic conditions and consumer demand. Open APIs and data portability will become crucial for this composable approach to flourish. Moreover, CDP will evolve into a general-purpose data platform to cater to the needs of different departments within the organization. Embracing the composable architecture and integrating customer data with other core domains within the organization will make this a reality.
Responsible AI and GenAI Infusion:
Transparency, consent management, and responsible data usage will be the buzzwords. Algorithms for customer segmentation & exclusion (generating meaningful personas), automated campaign optimization, NLP-powered sentiment analysis (across both customer and market levels), predictive analytics, and real-time personalization will evolve and become more sophisticated.
Data Privacy and Compliance:
Data privacy regulations such as the Digital Services Act and Digital Markets Act legislated by the European Commission; India’s Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act; and many more will continue to shape and evolve the CDP landscape. Organizations will prefer CDPs that have the required, relevant certifications for their industry to show compliance with global and regional laws (e.g., HIPAA compliance).
In summary, 2024 promises an exciting blend of partnerships, industry focus, sophistication enabled by GenAI, and a focus on regulatory compliance. Buckle up — the best is yet to come!
