Commerce is shifting from clicks to intent
For a while now, I’ve been calling it: Commerce is shifting from clicks to intent. From browsing to delegation. 🚀
We’re now seeing the first major scaffolding of this shift: https://about.starbucks.com/stories/2026/meet-the-beta-starbucks-app-in-chatgpt-a-new-way-to-discover-your-next-favorite-drink/
☕ Starbucks just launched a beta experience inside ChatGPT. It doesn’t start with a menu; it starts with a feeling. A mood. A vibe. 📸 Even a photo of your current workspace or the weather outside.
The system interprets that raw human intent and translates it into a product recommendation. While the final transaction still bounces back to the Starbucks app or .com site, the “upstream” battle for the customer’s mind has moved. Starbucks isn’t the first to explore this. I’ve seen similar patterns emerging in the luxury beauty segment. In a nut shell, this is a signal that the ‘intent-first’ model is hitting the mass market. Rest assured, this is just the beginning.
The early architecture of Agentic Commerce looks as follows:
🎯Intent Capture: Meeting the user in the moment of inspiration.
🧠Interpretation: Translating “vibes” into SKUs.
🛒Guided Action: Bridging the gap between a chat and a cart.
⚙️The next phase? Intent Execution. We are moving toward a world where the agent doesn’t just suggest. It negotiates the delivery and handles the settlement autonomously.
