In reality, they were experts in one end-to-end stack, able to take a product from idea to deployment without handing it off across five teams. The reality of forward-deployed engineering is that it\u2019s barely about the engineering itself. Around 80% to 90% of the work is actually about understanding people, processes, constraints, and meeting customers right where they are. If technical PMs are scarce, look for AI consultants with a practitioner background.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

– The Technical PM (as an FDE) is like the rapid-response architect and site foreman who arrives at a raw, muddy plot of land. They unblock local permits, align the stakeholder’s messy vision, and quickly erect a stunning, structural steel frame so everyone can finally see the building’s true shape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
– The Engineering Team is the specialized crew of concrete specialists, structural engineers, and electricians who come in next. Their job is to pour the foundation deep, wire it safely, and harden the building to withstand a Category 5 hurricane for the next fifty years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If you force your fast-moving Technical PM to stay behind and manually lay every brick or inspect the plumbing code, two things happen: they lose focus on the big-picture strategic problems they need to be solving, and your forward momentum completely grinds to a halt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
